The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is coming to the end of the group stage, and the United States women's national team has one final match to determine their path to the knockout rounds. The side faces Portugal on Tuesday at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, to determine their final position in the group. A win or draw against the Iberians can seal their place in the knockouts.
The U.S. women’s national soccer team will punch their ticket to the next round of the World Cup with a win or draw against Portugal, but you’ll need to set an alarm if you want to watch the game.
The U.S.-Portugal match is scheduled to kick off at 3 a.m. Eastern Tuesday morning from Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand (New Zealand is 16 hours ahead of Philadelphia, so the game will be played locally at 7 p.m.). The game will air live on Fox in English and on Telemundo in Spanish.
The Americans’ 13-game World Cup winning streak came to an end with a draw against the Netherlands last week, but they remain in good position to advance to the Round of 16 — all they need is a win or a draw to move on. The U.S. could also face elimination if they lose to Portugal, an underdog playing in its first women’s World Cup who still has a shot of advancing.
“For me, I’m excited,” said U.S. women’s soccer veteran Megan Rapinoe, who is playing in her final World Cup. “You have a must-perform, must-win type of game. … It’s a pressure moment, and that’s what the tournament is now. Every single game from here on out is that pressure moment, and that’s the best part of being at a World Cup.”
A loss opens the door to disaster if they lose against Portugal and the Netherlands win or draw against Vietnam. The USWNT opened the tournament with a convincing 3-0 win over Vietnam but but followed it up with a disappointing 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, with the equalizer provided by Lindsey Horan.
Portugal is coming off their first-ever World Cup victory, a 2-0 win over fellow debutants Vietnam. Portugal's victory keeps them in contention to advance, but they must defeat the U.S. in a would-be upset. Check out all the scenarios for Group E ahead of the match. Viewing information
The group that started the second half of the United States' match against the Netherlands on Wednesday — led by Rose Lavelle — looked sharp, but it wasn't able to take advantage of the momentum swing and come away with all three points.
Is Andonovski one change away from figuring it out, or does the current starting lineup need time?
After a win against Vietnam and a draw against the Netherlands, the United States Women's National Team is looking to finish World Cup group play strong against Portugal.
The USWNT enters its final match in Group E in a good position, but through its first two matches, the team has looked sluggish at times. In the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, the United States didn't bury a goal until 62 minutes in, when Lindsey Horan scored off an assist from Rose Lavelle. Against Portugal, we may see the USWNT start aggressive to compensate.
Portugal enters this match with a win and a loss, whereas the U.S. has a win and a draw, tied with the Netherlands atop the standings. The United States does have a two-goal advantage in its differential, but that doesn't put it in a position to become complacent.
The Netherlands will be playing Vietnam at the same time, as both teams scramble for the top spot in Group E.
